Hint for Cryptic Acrossword

Cryptic clues aren't usually 19 words long. The parsing task becomes impossible.

Start by looking only at these three clues:

"Tragic father decodes shy clause"

"A Greek salad of pi residue"

"A second year man found end in manacles when he presented an all day riddle."

See if you can figure out two of those three.

After that, re-read the line above the first section, and see if anything jumps out at you.

Next, see if you can figure out another clue in the first section.

If you get one of those, I'll guess that you didn't really get it by solving it completely as a cryptic clue. That might be really hard. In a vacuum, they're pretty poor cryptic clues. Instead, you probably gleaned some information from clue, used what you learned about the puzzle so far, maybe consulted Google for a bit, and thought, "I bet this is cluing <answer>." Then, you used the clue as a means of confirming your answer.
